About this objectTo commemorate the World War 1 Centenary, Goulburn Regional Art Gallery will be home to a 7-week-long exhibition - A Salute: Aussie soldier from 1915 meets Young Turk in 2015 that acknowledges and honours the Goulburn region's World War I efforts both here and abroad. The exhibition was supported by the NSW Government through ARTSNSW
Families of those who sacrificed their time and some their lives will be able to see their loved ones' names up on our honour roll, alongside memorabilia and objects loaned by regional families. Gallipoli drawings from well-known Australian artists: Idris Murphy, Luke Sciberras, Elisabeth Cummings, Euan Macleod, Leo Robba, Amanda Penrose Hart, John Walsh, Stanley Palmer, Michael Shepherd, Steve Lopes, Deidre Bean, Jonathan Throsby, Susan O'Doherty, Peter O'Doherty and Michael Nock.
Alongside artworks and memorabilia from established artists, personal collections, Museums, Historical Societies and the Rocky Hill War Memorial and Museum, the Gallery asked students from local primary schools to create postcards and messages that they could have written to the soldiers. The postcards were displayed in the exhibition and are now conserved in a set of 8 leather-bound journals. The student postcards formed a community engagement component of the exhibition, encouraging children to reflect upon the experiences and sacrifices of Australian soldiers. The set of postcards was transferred to the Rocky Hill War Memorial in 2026.
