In early 1921 Mary moved to Goulburn on medical advice. In her column, For Worker Women, in the Australian Worker, March 17, 1921, she referred to the move as a ‘change of air’ spending most of the next four years in Goulburn. She resided at the Imperial Hotel, for some of this time, and penned the Hound of the Road and also become interested in the long-standing controversy over the siting of the proposed war memorial in the town. Under the pen name “Hill 17” she wrote several letters to the Goulburn Evening Penny Post and the Southern Morning Herald, strongly stating her case for Rocky Hill to be the site for the much debated and long-awaited war memorial. She even offered to pay 20 pounds for the purchase of the hill if twenty Goulburn citizens would do the same. Mary proved to be a persuasive advocate as within two months her “Hill 17” letters had virtually guaranteed Rocky Hill’s selection by the War Memorial Committee. The Goulburn Evening Penny Post reported on 27 May 1922 the committee's comment, “All concerned ought to be grateful to “Hill 17” for the eloquent and far-seeing way in which he has re-submitted this question for further consideration.”
