This collection was owned by (Major) Dr. Joseph Harry Coles during his time in WW2. Joseph Harry COLES, Regimental Number N108234, was born 12 March 1901 in Newcastle, NSW. He enlisted in the Australian Army 3 April 1941, locality on enlistment Goulburn, NSW, place of enlistment Paddington, NSW. His next of kin was Lucy, his wife. He was discharged 15 June 1942, rank of Captain, posting at discharge 119 Australian General Hospital. Major Dr. J.H. Coles was stationed in Darwin, 119th Australian General Hospital, Adelaide River, N.T. from 1941-1942.
For a short period he remained in the Army, spending half his time with his practice and the other half at Kenmore, which had been partly turned into a military hospital, the 114th A.G.H. On June 15th, 1942, Joe received his discharge but continued as visiting medical officer till relieved by the arrival of Col. Archie Aspinall. It had been an interlude only in his career, and he was happy to be home with his family.
