Name/TitleHand-carved Hallway Chair
About this objectA rare and well-preserved high-back decorative carved hallway chair, handmade by an unknown Great War soldier from Goulburn. At the crown are the numerals 1919; the seat and seatback are carved with grape vines and leaves. During and after the Great War, woodworking, particularly making furniture, was used as a form of occupational therapy to help AIF soldiers recover from injuries, both physical and mental, and prepare them for civilian life. Woodworking offered a way to regain skills, build confidence, and provide a sense of purpose after the trauma of war.
